learn the narrator's involvement with the war: He supervises a group of ambulance
drivers. At the start of this chapter the narrator discusses the condition of the cars with the
men. Later in the chapter Rinaldi convinces the narrator to join him in visiting Miss
Barkley. He agrees and meets Miss Barkley and her friend Helen Ferguson. In chapter 5
of the book the narrator speaks of preparations being made for the planned Italian
offensive against the Austrians, while this happens four Austrian shells explode nearby.
That night after dinner he visits Miss Barkley again, and they kiss. Three days pass and
