In general, I believe it is essential to set standards for, not only, IT departments but the overall company as well. Typically, standards are established by someone in authority as a rule of measure for quantity, value or quality. Specifically, in relation to the technical industry standards are necessary to establish MIS harmony, so to speak. In the article “Are Standards Helpful?” George had to step up and take the leadership role to establish a standard for the company. Initially, on a short-term basis this adjustment created disgust and frustration, but when considering the long-term benefits it was the best decision to make. Transitioning from the varying types of software programs, brands and versions to complete common goals will only enhance the opportunity for effective communication and interfacing between the departments.
