Overview

In 1996 the Muddy River overflowed its banks and caused over 100 million dollars in damages to residents, institutions and public property infrastructure in the Fenway Cultural District. In June of 1998 floods hit the Muddy River once again, and again lack of preparation and timely notice resulted in millions of dollars in damages. As a result Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (former Metropolitan District Commission, MDC), and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority have adopted ¡§Standard Operating Procedures for Muddy River Flood Control,¡¨ and ¡§Standard Operating Procedures for Hurricanes and Storms.¡¨ NU is now a critical link in the chain of these standard operating procedures.
