Jack London’s novels were affected by his childhood, political views and the events happening in America during the 1900’s. Jack London was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. His father left his family when Jack was only 10 so he lived with his mother, Flora Wellman, a music teacher and spiritualist. Because his mother was sick he was mainly raised by the families’ ex slave, Virginia Prentiss. London was mainly self-educated, learning by reading books at the library. The first job that London had was at a cannery but soon he quit using money borrowed from Virginia to buy a ship and become an oyster pirate. After his ship was destroyed he was out of a job. To keep himself alive he went door to door begging living in slums and prisons. This lifestyle gave him a lot of insight into the human class system. London went to the University of California but could only stay for a year because he didn’t have enough money to stay all 4 years.
