Do you think this movie represents men in a way that is typical of Hollywood film?
25th Hour does not really change the way men are represented in the typical Hollywood films. In those films, men have to suppress their emotions and endure hardship without complaint. They ignore signs of illness and suffer silently. There is also a lot of aggressive competition between them. Men have to represents beauty, sexuality, class, and wealth in order to be successful. They also have to have a certain amount of dominance over woman. 25th Hour represents men as they were represented in “film noir”. In this type of film, men want to give protection to the women, there is an emotional attitude going on without showing directly their emotions, and they are trapped by a social situation. In 25th Hour, Monty does a lot of the narration and has a lot of flashbacks just like it will be in a “film noir”. We often go into his head, and we find out what he is thinking.
