Olaudah Equiano’s life was full of extravagant experiences that he gathered and placed into his memoirs entitled quite simply The Life of Gustavus Vassa. Equiano faced incomprehensible hardships as well as observed parts of the world that people have only dreamt of seeing. This fact must be acknowledged; however, the reader must not deduce Equiano’s life to one that is a simple tragedy or that of some sort of adventurer. Olaudah Equiano’s life consisted of varying degrees of captivity as well as varying degrees of freedom that spanned his life from his childhood through his death. Although it may seem that Equiano was most free after purchasing his way out of slavery; conversely, it was in his childhood that our narrator was freest.
