The basics of a computer based recording studio:
PC
a sound card - these can vary in complexity and price. They can also come with mixing capabilities and preamps.
a multitrack recording software.
a microphone
PC speakers (or headphones).
The computer can be just about anything. You will need some hard drive space - 2 to 3 gig should be plenty.
The sound card - again a wide variety. This will allow you to input your mics/instruments. The simplest sound cards are factory installed with the computer, and have a stereo analog input - meaning - that you can plug an 1/8" stereo plug into it from your instrument source. Believe it or not, if you have mixer, these can actually work alright. I have recorded many demos like this, and they have all come out quite good. The problem with these sound cards is that they are not dead quiet and you can only record 2 sources at a time.
Continuing...a more complex and expensive sound card will allow you to record more sources......
