Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919. His family was sharecroppers. Jackie’s father left his wife and his five, children including Jackie, when Jackie was very young. When Jackie was growing up his family was the only black family on the block. Jackie became very good at all sports at a young age.

At U.C.L.A Jackie became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports, basketball, baseball, football, and track. He was forced to leave college due to financial difficulties. He eventually joined the army. In the end Jackie left the army with an honorable discharge. Then he played one season in the Negro Baseball League in 1945.

Two years later the Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey asked Jackie about joining the Dodgers. The Major League hadn’t had an African American player since 1889. He had broken the color barrier. At the end of his Rookie season playing on the Dodgers he had became National League Rookie of the year.......
