Considering a Printed Advertisement
The advertisement in question is a two page spread which came in one of the glossy magazine style compilations inserted into the Sunday paper. Most of the other ads surrounding it are one page, so the two page design makes an immediate statement of importance. The ad itself is simple, elegant, and is uncrowded, both in the sense of a layout which leaves a lot of open, white space, and in a simple, muted color palette. This enhances the sense of importance to the two-page spread, especially given the vibrant multi-colored and somewhat frantic advertisements for foods and restaurants generally trying to look “fun!” which make up much of the rest of the supplement. This ad feels as if it is appealing to a more elite person who might be more interested in the message than in the expected coupon, even though the coupons on the bottom of the adspace take up nearly a third of the layout.
