“All men are created equal.” Would you agree? Both Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King question this proposition in their speeches. To successfully address their audience and create a unified speech, both speakers employ clever and effective use of rhetoric devices, a persuasive art of speaking. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and King’s I Have a Dream both present ideas on freedom and equality integrated into two powerful and memorable speeches evoking mixed responses from the audience.
Freedom. A simple word that can have so many meanings for each individual. What is freedom to you? For Lincoln, who had to address a restless crowd of 20000 people gathered at Gettysburg in commemoration of soldiers in the civil war.
Freedom was the ultimate purpose for the continuation of the bitter battles and for Lincoln to urge his people to continue the fight. Recognising that his audience were Christian believers, Lincoln employed biblical allusions to evoke a positive response.......
