The required text is Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty, Volume II (New York: W.W. Houghton & Co. 2005).
Students should stay ahead of class discussions with their readings as indicated by the scheduled topics below.
Students must also read and study the Constitution of the United States by the end of the first week of class.
Grades will consist of a midterm (30%), a final examination (40%), a cited paper due 23 November (20%) and class participation/quizzes (10%). Tests will consist of a choice of essay questions, on take-home tests submitted electronically. Presentation of an interpretative thesis, well supported by historical facts will be the basis for essay evaluation. Quizzes will be brief identifications to insure reading assignments are being done.
On 23 November, students must submit a five-seven paragraph cited paper conforming to the Chicago Manual of Style or the MLA. Sources for the paper must include one primary source, at least one printed secondary source, and......
