On October 24, 2007 the death of Terri Shavio, a 39 year old woman who was on life support for more than nine years since a heart attack cut off oxygen to her brain.
While her husband said she would want life support terminated, her parents said she was responsive and should be kept alive. This case was on national television, the nation watched how tragic it was and how heartbreaking it was for all who those involved. The husband won the court order and allowed his wife to die while the parents of Mrs. Shavio endured the pain of watching their daughter die. The fight between Mr. Shavio and Mrs. Shavio’s parent could have been avoided if Mrs. Shavio had a living will in place.
I urge you today to create a living will and have it in place in case an unexpected event occurs.
