Unable to separate my appreciation for one of the greatest philosophers of all-time and the man who most consider to be the father of philosophy, I have instead decided to place myself in Athens as a citizen and a jury member during the trial of Socrates in 399 B.C. to look at the facts unbiased:
Meletus, along with two of my fellow Athenians have brought Socrates up on charges of refusing to recognize the Gods of the state, along with corrupting the youth of Athens. The first offense is worrisome to myself along with my fellow Athenians as according to the beliefs of Athenians, the impious individual is seen as a contaminant who, if not controlled or punished, might bring upon the wrath of the Gods in the form of plague or sterility (Linder).
The second charge is no less severe as we have recently been through a great amount of turmoil between the Peloponessian War and the nine month rule of the Thirty Tyrants that stole our democracy and threatened to take it from us......
