I apologise if it appears I may be labouring that definition but in a complex ethical and moral issue like euthanasia there are many side issues which I believe the Opposition may attempt to focus on to divert the debate away from the proposition’s stated intention.

I would like to explore the moral and ethical issues surrounding voluntary euthanasia and the complex technical details which would allow voluntary euthanasia to be legalised.

Quite simply, what is voluntary euthanasia?

Euthanasia is defined as: ‘…a gentle and easy death; brought about in cases of incurable and painful disease’. I trust I do not need to define the qualifying phrase ‘voluntary’.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm NOT advocating that we should ‘get rid’ of the old, the infirm and the unwanted. No one on the proposition believes that genetic or ethnic cleansing is in any way part of tonight’s debate. There can be no voluntary "euthanasia" if any persuasion is present. No one would......
