INTRODUCTION :
Rollo May was born on April 21, 1909 in Ada, Ohio . . His childhood was not particularly pleasant . His parents didn’t get along and eventually divorced and his sister had a psychotic breakdown .
Rollo May was consistently been referred to as the “ father of existential psychology” . This , in itself is an amazing accomplishment - his pioneering of an existential psychotherapy - since existential philosophy originated in Europe and for the most part , met with hostility and contempt in United States .
After a brief stint at Michigan State (he was asked to leave because of his involvement with a radical student magazine), he attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where he received his bachelors degree in 1930 .
