Pablo Picasso was born in 1881. His father was a respected art teacher. Many think his father's being an art teacher had a major influence on Picasso's artistic interest.
It didn't take long for Picasso to get accepted into the Academy at Barcelona, for he was only fourteen. Picasso was a fast learner and found school to be boring. Barcelona was where Picasso painted his first work, "Girl with Bare Feet". After being at Barcelona for two years he transferred to obtain better schooling. Three years later Picasso won a gold metal for his work, "Customs of Aragon".
Many of Picasso's works are influenced by what was happening in the world around him and in his personal life. Picasso temporarily left the city and went to the country because of an illness. When Picasso returned he disliked modern art and used his mother's maiden name. Throughout the next four years Picasso went through a depressing state and lived life as a very poor man.
