Mark Bethinski (The Russian tragedy)
I am convinced, that the plot of Macbeth is strong enough to survive transportation in a quite remote time and place. In Mark Bethinski the action of Shakespeare's tragedy takes place in the Russian Province in 1912. Coming home from the wolf-hunt Count Mark Bethinski, meets a gipsy-woman, who gives him a mysterious prophecy: he is and has to become a Prince. Tempted by his ambition for more wealth and power, egged on by his wife Elena kills his cousin, Prince Aleksej Dunkanoff , the reach land-lord and Imperators secret counselor. Bethinski inherits his cousin's title and property (sugar-beet), while Dunkanov's son Mikhail, convicted of murder flees. Tensions at the sugar-beet proceeding factory grow. The times of harmony and prosperity are over with Bethinski's death. Workers, displeased by Makarofski inhumane and avid new rule prepare a revolt against him.
