It is commonly believed that the Middle Ages were merely a period of no change or advancement that bridged the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Renaissance. However, the theme of the excerpt from James M. Powell’s The Civilization of the West is that, contrary to this belief, the time of the Middle Ages was actually a time of progression. Powell states that political, economic, social, and cultural advancements were made during this time, and helped pave the way for the Renaissance and the structure of modern society.
