Landon Carter was a typical teenage boy growing up in the late 1950's. He often recalls his senior year in high school (1958), a year that would change his life forever.
Landon had dated a couple of girls in high school and he even said he had fallen in love with one of them, but certainly he never thought he would fall for Jamie Sullivan. Jamie was shy, conservative and in Landon's eyes, a complete dork. Not to mention, she was the daughter of a Baptist Minister.
It was time for the homecoming dance and Landon was looking for a date, but all the girls he knew had already been asked. He was left with two options: go to the dance alone or ask Jamie? Hesitant in his decision, he asked Jamie to be his date at the dance. Of course she said yes because Jamie never said no to anyone in need.
