Was the United States Justified in acquiring empire?

At the end of the 1800s the United States joined the global trend to acquire lands over seas. Nations in Europe and Japan had already started to seize land. The United States competed with other nations to get their foot in the door with trade in China. I believe the United States was justified in accruing empire. Three factors pushed the U.S. to join the grab for land. Economic competition for raw materials and markets for its manufactured goods, political and military competition, as well as creation of a powerful new navy, and the mission to spread civilization and Christianity.
Many Americans opposed this because of their moral or practical beliefs, they felt that the taking of colonies was not right and would cost too much.
