One who has read the renowned book The Great Gatsby must remember The Valley of Ashes; it is located between the Eggs and the New York City, but it is ignored emotionlessly by residents in both the ornamental West Egg and the mannered East Egg, who necessarily pass by the Valley every time they travel between home and New York City. To me, Nick’s description of the Valley in chapter II of the book sums up by one word – death. Men in the valley “move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air” (27); the Valley itself is “a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens” (27); this area and its people are simply abandoned, and both people outside and inside the Valley view the valley as dead.
