The Self-enlightenment of Dunstan Ramsay
Robertson Davies is the author of the novel, Fifth Business. In this novel, the story is told in a letter by a man named Dunstan Ramsay addressed to Colborne College to inform the Headmaster of his retirement. He fought in WWI, won a Victoria Cross, and dedicated his life to hagiology. As he grew up, he journeyed through a life of valuable lessons, encountering mistakes and paving the path in discovering himself. As you read through the novel, you realize from the beginning women play an important role in Dunstan's life. From being a infant to an adult, they are a big influence upon him. Mary Dempster, Dianna Marfleet, and Liesl help him in his self-enlightenment, which brings him to change his decisions in life throughout the years.
