The Five Pillars of Islam
Islam, meaning submission/surrender to God, the last of the Abrahamic religions, originated in the Arabian Peninsula at the heart of the Middle East during the 7th Century. God’s final prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570. Allah (God) revealed the Qur’an (final book of divine guidance and direction for humanity) to him through the Angel Gabriel and he began spreading the Islamic message. In 632 AD, Muhammad and his followers left the holy city of Mecca and migrated to Medina to escape the persecution they faced from his own family members and other Mecca tribes. This migration, Hijra, marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar. (The Heritage Society) After Muhammad arrived in Medina, Islamic laws and Pillars were established and solidified.
