Literature and Life 1
Literature is an art form, which is a reflection of every aspect of human life. Most literature is written to appeal to its readers, but more importantly, it is written to build consciousness and establish a connection between individual lives and morality. Literature is often a representation of cultural, social, or personal beliefs and attitudes based on the author’s perceptions and life experiences. Many examples of literature often consist of timeless lessons, which depict life †whether it is in a family, religious, or community setting. This paper will focus on three short stories: Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis”, Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour, and William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”. This paper will examine themes, which are prevalent in family and community life. The themes of family duty, alienation, freedom, and death in the above mentioned short stories show that art does imitate life.
