Lee illustrates issues relevant to today’s society in To Kill a Mockingbird. The struggles and challenges women face in today’s society are illustrated through Scout’s suffering from the stereotypes imposed upon her by the rigid sexism and gender rules that govern southern life. Not all societies have learnt the equality of all human beings, this is evident throughout the book when the black society is oppressed by the Maycomb society, being only referred to as “nigger” or “boy” and not given the same opportunities as the average white man. Men and women today still have to stand up for unpopular and unfairly judged minorities in today’s society.
