" The lesson "
In the story, after my graduation from high school Roberto accidently took a clerical job with a Buenos Aires insurance company. The job was extremely unpleasant and I found myself among some pretty annoying people with whom I had nothing in common, but as I was barely eighteen years old, he didn't much care there are two ways of looking at this story. Some see it as a loose lesson on life given to a young worker by an elder of many years. Some see it as an attempt of a shyster-type employer to size up and possibly take advantage of a younger employee. On the way down to the ground floor, don Fernando declares class warfare on young Roberto and tries to make him feel intimidated by his presence. Roberto, the clerk, responds to don Fernando's pronouncements as though he were simply a common peon trying to fit in. don Fernando 'buys' the behavior.
