How does a counsellor differ from a friend?

Counselling is a clear professional arrangement that someone seeking help freely enters into. Counselling is not ‘advice giving’, judging or making decisions for people. It involves listening, helping someone identify problems, empowering individuals to find solutions themselves, awareness and empathy. Counselling is a professional relationship based on one person helping another; empowering that person and maintaining a ‘safe’ space with clearly defined boundaries in which a person can share their vulnerabilities. A trained professional counsellor carries out counselling bound by an ethical framework (e.g. BCAP or UKCP).
Approaching friends or family for help is very different to seeking the services of a counsellor or therapist. Friends and family are not......
