The evolution of gangs in American prisons started mostly in the 1970’s, but there are a few gangs that go back further than this. Prison gangs almost always start out with the main purpose being surviving. This later becomes something much more with racism, hate, and acts of violence. Gangs in prisons became bigger and stronger because of many different reasons and the major reason is for protection. Over time more and more youth are put into prisons they join a gang for survival. Today, gangs are major part of the prison system, but more control over the prison population means that a prisoner does not have to join a gang to make it.

Some of the reasons that helped prison gangs come about are changes in prison culture, increasing number of violent crimes, racial segregation, old versus young, inmates wanting to share in prison decision-making., and street gangs.
