At the beginning of this paper there will be a brief discussion on the statistical infrequency criterion and how it determines what is normal and abnormal. Following on from this there will be a look at abnormality from an individuals perspective. Situational factors will be presented on how we may define normal and abnormal behaviour. Leading on from this the essay will look at what type of behaviours may prevent an individual from achieving a desired goal. Finally, the criterion of personality studies will be looked at.
The statistical infrequency criterion
According to the statistical infrequency criterion, what this determines what is average is seen as normal. Behaviour is deemed abnormal if it falls outside the middle ranges to the extreme.
