Patterns of Addiction within Families
The label of “Irish Catholic drunks” is something that has been used jokingly in my family for quite a while. Everyone laughs about it and takes an odd sort of pride in being the epitome of the name. The reality of the situation is that alcohol and drug use has been a problem that has long affected my family. I chose to research the patterns of addiction within families because of this. My intention was to get a better understanding of why such a destructive pattern exists within my gene pool.
My assumptions when I first began my investigation of addiction patterns were that these patterns were largely based on environment and learned behaviors. I felt as though growing up in a situation where relatives had substance abuse problems may lead a person to believe that this is normal and increase their chances of developing an addiction themselves.
