Communication Without Emotion
The article, “Developing Personal and Emotional Relationships Via Computer-Mediated Communication,” by Brittney Chenault, discusses how communication via Internet lacks emotion. Although individuals exchange pleasantries, argue, engage intellectual discourse, conduct commerce, exchange knowledge, gossip, feud, fall in love, find friends and lose them, play games, flirt, create a little high art and a lot of idle talk, it’s an inadequate way for people for people to share emotional content and allow for a meaningful, long-lasting relationship, due to the lack of non verbal “cues.” Measures of interpersonal attraction (eye contact and body language) are non-existent in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). CMC has however developed symbols to compensate the lack of emotion felt during its communication. Smiley and frowning face, along with LOL.
