What type of experimental design does the researcher have and why? In describing the design, explain the variables in the study.
The researcher has a 2 ' 3 between subjects factorial design. The experiment is a quasi experiment since the independent variable cannot be manipulated and participants belonged to a pre-existing age group prior to the experiment. The experiment is called a 2 ' 3 between subjects factorial design since there are two independent variables; one with 2 levels and the other with 3 levels. The first independent variable, age is ‘manipulated’ since participants are separated into the groups: the young and the older adults. The second independent variable, treatment, has three levels: no treatment, (the control group) a placebo (a sugar pill) and the drug (the herbal supplement).
