To be an artist includes much; one must possess many gifts—absolute gifts—which have not been acquired by one’s own effort. And, moreover, to succeed, the artist must possess the courageous soul. –Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin was an artist with many gifts, a writer with many gifts. Not to mention a courageous soul, because she was definitely way before her time.
“Kate Chopin was born Katherine O’Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850 to Eliza and Thomas O’Flaherty. Out of five children she was the only to live past the age of twenty five” (Wyatt par. 1). As a child she was sent to a Catholic boarding school in St. Louis. Because Kate’s father died in a train accident she wound up living at home with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, all of them widows.
